Choose your IB Physics level.
IB Physics is offered at Standard Level and Higher Level. Choose Physics SL or Physics HL to reach the lecture notes, question banks, past papers and exam-preparation resources designed for your level.
IB Physics SL
Study the shared Physics themes at Standard Level with structured notes, targeted questions and past-paper practice.
Explore IB Physics SL Resources → Higher LevelIB Physics HL
Study the shared Physics themes together with the additional Higher Level depth and more demanding multi-stage problem solving.
Explore IB Physics HL Resources →Course structure and content
IB Physics develops physical understanding alongside mathematical, experimental and data-analysis skills. At both HL and SL, students need to move confidently between conceptual explanations, equations, graphs, experimental evidence and quantitative reasoning.
The five themes are not intended to function as isolated units. Ideas from motion, energy, waves, fields and microscopic physics frequently interact, especially in examination questions where the method is not stated in advance.
Experimental and data-based thinking
Physics is not only a collection of formulas. A strong student should be able to identify relevant variables, interpret a graph, evaluate a model, reason about uncertainty and decide whether a calculated result is physically sensible.
Apply ideas under pressure
Develop fluency with calculations, explanations, diagrams, data interpretation and multi-stage problem solving.
Investigate scientifically
Use an individual investigation to demonstrate experimental thinking, data analysis, evaluation and scientific communication.

How Higher Level and Standard Level differ.
Both levels share the same broad Physics framework. The main difference is the amount of content, depth and complexity expected.
Standard Level
SL focuses on the shared course content and develops the core conceptual, mathematical and experimental skills needed across the five themes.
- Shared Physics themes
- Core mathematical and experimental reasoning
- Focused syllabus depth
Higher Level
HL includes the shared content together with additional depth and extensions. Students should expect more demanding combinations of ideas and longer reasoning chains.
- Shared themes plus HL extensions
- Greater mathematical and conceptual depth
- More sustained multi-stage problem solving
Tips for success in IB Physics.
Strong results come from connecting equations to physical meaning, then practising until that reasoning becomes reliable under exam conditions.
Understand before substituting
Identify the physical system, known quantities, assumptions and relationships before putting numbers into an equation.
Use diagrams and units
Clear diagrams, directions, units and sign conventions often reveal mistakes before they reach the final answer.
Review wrong answers
Separate conceptual errors, equation-selection errors, algebraic mistakes and interpretation errors so the same problem does not repeat.
