Course structure and content

IB Mathematics students study one of two pathways: Analysis & Approaches (AA) or Applications & Interpretation (AI). Each pathway is offered at both Higher Level and Standard Level.

The five broad mathematical areas give the programme a common structure, but the way those areas are developed differs by course. AA places more weight on analytical and symbolic reasoning, while AI places more weight on modelling, data, technology and interpretation.

Analysis & Approaches

Best aligned with students who enjoy algebraic structure, functions, mathematical reasoning and calculus.

Applications & Interpretation

Best aligned with students who enjoy modelling, statistics, technology and interpreting mathematics in context.

Higher Level and Standard Level

Higher Level courses contain greater depth and additional material, while Standard Level courses have a more focused syllabus scope. The appropriate level depends on your programme, future study plans and the course offered by your school.

Higher Level

More content, greater depth and a higher expectation of sustained, multi-stage mathematical reasoning.
